The Department of Economics "S. Cognetti de Martiis" is the direct descendant of one of the most ancient and prestigious italian institutions for economic studies, the Laboratorio di Economia Politica, established in 1893. More oh this.. (historical notes in italian only). Its academic and research staff includes over 60 economists, mainly from the Faculty of Political Science, the Faculty of Law, and from the School of Communication Studies.

The Department is located in Turin city centre, in Palazzo Accorsi, a historical building at the corner of Via Po and Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The Library is located nearby, on the third floor of Palazzo Nuovo, the building that hosts Turin's humanistic faculties. It contains approximately 100,000 volumes, subscribes to over 250 journals, and has a large number of statistical sourcebooks and official publications from italian and foreign institutions.

The Department offers numerous opportunities for advanced study and research. Doctoral programmes in European Studies and in Communication Studies are housed within the Department. In addition, the Department is a member of a consortium (CORIPE) which offers a Master in Economics and a Master in Finance.

Several research centres are also housed within the Department: the Centre for Household, Income, Labour and Demographic Economics (CHILD), the Research Centre on Emerging, Transition and Developing Countries (CIRPET), the Laboratory on Innovation Economics “Franco Momigliano”, the Osservatorio Giuridico-Economico sull’Unione Europea, the Research Centre on History and Methodology of Political Economy (CESMEP), the International Center for Research on the Economics of Culture, Institutions, and Creativity (EBLA CENTER). Some of the research institutes with which the Department is affiliated are the Centro Interstrutture di Servizi Informatici e Telematici per le Facoltà Umanistiche (CISI), the Women's Studies Center (CISRDE), and the Center of American and Euro-American Studies "Piero Bairati".
